The Virtues of SIP As IP-PBX, TDM and POTs Give Way to Full IP Network Virtualization: Reduce Costs, Transform Communications

We’ve been seeing this trend for years – enterprises moving away from traditional voice networking to virtualized solutions, which take advantage of SIP trunking and the benefits of real time communications services delivered via the cloud.

No more premise-based equipment to buy and manage.

No more long-term contracts for the related licenses associated with everything from applications to desktop phones.

As the systems that replaced “wired” phones and dedicated circuits – or “long distance trunks” – continue to age, and technical debt is written off the books, enterprises are opting to transform their networks by taking full advantage of SIP services, which have progressed in the meantime.

This progression has included the transformation of service provider networks, and offerings of SIP Trunking as-a-service from the largest Communications Service Providers (CSPs), who no longer require upfront capex to replace the “telephone closets” and instead are able to provide subscription or “seat” based services from basic to premium, including Unified Communications, Contact Center solutions and more, over their modernized infrastructure.

SIP Trunking offers financial as well as functional advantages over traditional connections like T1s or PRIs, because SIP Trunks are virtual connections, which support multimedia (voice, video and web) communication over the Internet, outside of traditional telephone networks, giving you more services on the same broadband connections, including those which are redundant for extreme resilience and improved Quality of Service (QoS).

Here’s are a few ways in which SIP trunking generates significant cost savings for our clients:

  1. No capex and minimal upfront costs
  2. Less expensive connections compare to dedicated circuits: the right SIP trunking solution can eliminate 100% of traditional POTS lines or PRI/T1 trunks – with savings of more than 50% off, depending on the solution
  3. Lower or no long-distance fees, both domestic and international, compared to running calls over the PSTN
  4. Free internal calling across branch-office networks
  5. Support of traditional IP-PBX applications, including call recording when moved to a cloud PBX
  6. Ease of rolling out cloud communication services, which work securely on desktop handsets, softphones, and mobile devices

Given recent innovations in SIP trunking, including as-a-service models from nearly ever major CSP in the U.S. today, there are many options on the technical front, including compatibility with a wide range of Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) PBXs, IP PBXs, SIP endpoints, WebRTC gateways and UC solutions, such including the increasingly popular Microsoft Teams.

Security has also improved with new Session Border Control features, including network topology hiding, DoS/DDoS prevention, encryption and NAT traversal as well as Call Admission Control capabilities.

The real upside to making the move is simplification of network administration, given that the majority of provisioning and management is done in software, including endpoint registration, authentication and per-call state information, and new security software embedded into systems that can detect anomalies and otherwise provide intelligence that strengthens and streamlines operations.

In summary – save money, improve network availability and performance, and position enterprise communications in a more future-proof fashion.
